Hi there, I’m Becky Weider, IBCLC, and I'm here to clear up some common misconceptions about breastfeeding. Over the years, I’ve heard many myths that can cause unnecessary worry and confusion for new mamas. Let's debunk ten of these myths with evidence-based information to help you feel more confident and informed.
1. Myth: Breastfeeding is supposed to come naturally.
Reality: While breastfeeding is natural, it doesn’t always come naturally. Many mamas and their littles need time and practice to get the hang of it. Remember, it’s perfectly okay to seek support from a lactation consultant like me. I’m here to help!
2. Myth: You won’t produce enough milk.
Reality: Most mamas can produce enough milk for their littles. Frequent breastfeeding and ensuring a good latch are key to maintaining a healthy milk supply. Trust your body and stay positive!
3. Myth: Breastfeeding is painful.
Reality: Some discomfort is common in the early days, but persistent pain isn’t normal. Pain usually indicates an issue with the little's latch or positioning. Let’s work together to make breastfeeding a comfortable experience for you and your little one!
4. Myth: You have to follow a strict diet.
Reality: There’s no need for a strict diet while breastfeeding. Eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated are important, but you don’t need to avoid specific foods unless your little one shows signs of sensitivity. Enjoy your meals without unnecessary restrictions!
5. Myth: Breastfeeding ties you down.
Reality: Breastfeeding can actually be very convenient once you and your little establish a routine. With practice, you can breastfeed in public discreetly and comfortably. I’ve seen many mamas master this and gain a great sense of freedom.
6. Myth: Formula is just as good as breast milk.
Reality: While formula provides essential nutrients, breast milk offers unique antibodies and other beneficial components that formula cannot replicate. Breast milk is designed specifically for your little, and it’s something only you can provide.
7. Myth: You can’t breastfeed if you return to work.
Reality: Many working mamas successfully breastfeed by pumping milk during the workday and breastfeeding when they’re with their littles. Planning ahead and talking to your employer about your needs can make this transition smoother.
I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion surrounding breastfeeding. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need support. I'm here for you!
