Hi, I’m Becky Weider, IBCLC. Creating a comfortable and supportive environment for breastfeeding at home can make a world of difference. Here are some tips and tricks to help you set up a breastfeeding-friendly home.

1. Choose a Comfortable Spot

Having a comfortable spot in your home, whether it's on the couch or a special chair, can make breastfeeding sessions more enjoyable. Look for a place that provides good back support and allows you to relax.

2. Organize a Nursing Station

Create a designated nursing station with all your essentials within arm’s reach. Keep items like water, snacks, burp cloths, a phone charger, and a good book or your phone nearby to keep yourself comfortable and entertained.

3. Use Pillows for Support

Not all mamas need a pillow designed specifically for nursing. You can start out by using couch and bed pillows, and if you find they aren’t working as well as you’d like, then you can look into purchasing a breastfeeding pillow. I really like the My Brestfriend.

4. Establish a Routine

Establishing a routine can help you and your little get into a comfortable rhythm. This doesn’t mean sticking to a strict schedule but rather finding a flow that works for both of you.

5. Create a Calm Environment

A calm and quiet environment can make breastfeeding more relaxing. Consider dimming the lights, playing soft music, or using white noise to create a soothing atmosphere.

6. Get Your Family Involved

Involve your family in creating a supportive environment. They can help by burping or changing your little one’s diaper, bringing you snacks in case you forget to eat, or taking care of household chores. Let’s face it, you are exhausted and sometimes the last thing you’re thinking about is taking care of yourself. Let your family and friends help!

Creating a breastfeeding-friendly home is all about making you and your little one comfortable and relaxed. If you need more personalized advice, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m here to help!
